Make sure you are registered to vote in the General Election

Residents are being reminded to make sure they are able to vote as Craven District Council's Returning Officer received official notification of the general election last week.

election writ 2017

The parliamentary writ was hand delivered to Paul Shevlin, the council's chief executive, by Royal Mail on Thursday, May 4.

The writ is issued, after the dissolution of Parliament, by the Clerk of the Crown to each constituency calling for a general election to take place.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is Monday, May 22, 2017, with the general election taking place on June 8, 2017.

Mr Shevlin said: "This writ marks the formal start of the general election process and it's important that everyone has the opportunity to have their say. I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to exercise their democratic right by making sure they are registered to vote, and by voting on June 8.''

Electors can register online quickly and easily at www.gov.uk/registertovote - you only need your National Insurance number handy.

The Parliamentary count for the Skipton and Ripon constituency will take place overnight on June 8 in Skipton Town Hall, with a result expected to be declared around 3 am on the morning of Friday June 9.
